The
new university campus, currently in construction at Stockwell Street in Greenwich
will excitingly be the new home for the School of Architecture, Design and
Construction in 2014. The Stockwell
Street campus will provide a new library, an excellent Architecture Studio
space, 14 roof gardens, television studios, sound studios, a photography studio,
animation studios and editing suites. Want to know the latest from the
Stockwell Studio, check out this blog every fortnight here.
For more info check out our website, here you will find a digital animation which takes you on a virtual walkthrough of the building as it will look in the future. We have also placed a camera on top of St Alfege Church for the entire duration of the construction, this takes a photo every 20 minutes and the time-lapse footage captured is available here… http://www.gre.ac.uk/stockwell-street
If you would like to see the site in the flesh please get in contact with Adele Brooks, Estate Development Manager, at a.brooks@gre.ac.uk and join one of the staff & student site visits including a chance to speak to the Construction Team.
Please get in touch if you would like any more information, the development is an open learning resource and all students and staff are encouraged to take maximum advantage of this opportunity.
What’s new in the Stockwell Studio 07.05.13
Attached below is an image of the double height
atrium like section of the academic building. From this angle it looks into
what will be one of the internal court yards which will be surrounded but curtain
glass and will flood this area with natural light. Although the space is within
the academic building that will house the School of Architecture, Design and
Construction (SoADC) the University would like to see this space as a highly
flexible and functioning space for all departments and schools within the
University including performances from surrounding theatres, exhibitions linked
with the spaces on the floor below and a location for social after hours
events.
Come one, come all…
The photo below is of one of the site visits held this week on site.
This group was a mixture of MBA students and staff from the library. Here they
are on the first floor with in the studio space for the SoADC students. From
this photo you get a better understanding of the scale of the building. Quite
often the people who visit the site are shocked by the scale of the project
after only seeing the drawings on paper or peeking through the hoarding on
Stockwell Street. Access to this area of the has only been possible for the
last couple of weeks and is a good point in progress for the site and very
lucky for this group!
What’s new in the Stockwell Studio 02.04.13
Attached below is a photo of what will be an open space which will connect
the large lecture theatre, the café space and also the Stephen Lawrence
Gallery. Being a large open space it is planned that it will be used as an
exhibition space for architecture students as well as in conjunction with
exhibitions undertaken by the Stephen Lawrence Gallery. The space will be
filled with natural light coming from the stair well visible on the right and
the canon like void that separates the Architecture building and the Library.
Open spaces to connect…
This photo is taken looking to the right of the previous photo. It will be
these two connected spaces that will be the main thorough fare for the ground
floor of the academic building. Looking at this view you can see the entrance
to the Stephen Lawrence Gallery which is opposite the small lecture theatre
entrance.

Attached below is
an image of the large lecture theatre which will hold around 320 people! From
this image you can see the raked seating structure which will be completed with
wood and concrete to define the steps and allow for placement of the chairs. In
this image you can also see the storage for the cooling and ventilation units
for the lecture theatre positioned under the seating. The steel structure of
the raked seating means that should need be, in many years’ time, the seating
can be disassembled and the room used for a different purpose, one of the many
future proofing design aspects of this building.
Lights, camera, build…
The photo below is of one of the two TV studios located in the basement.
This is a very impressive room with great space and height with double height
ceilings. The steel structure in the foreground of the photo will be the
partition of the two studios with the control room for the lighting and sound
above. The TV studios will be of very high quality with almost all aspects of
its design and build matching the standards of the BBC studios, an amazing asset
to our students.
